Whether you own a new vehicle or an old Toyota Land Cruiser, it is vital to keep your vehicle properly maintained. Owning classic Toyota FJ, whether it’s an FJ60 or FJ40, is like holding a piece of automotive history and it is important to maintain the vehicle so that it keeps its value. These iconic vehicles are renowned for their ruggedness, off-road capability, and timeless design, however, like any classic car, maintaining an FJ60 or FJ40 requires diligence and attention to detail to ensure they continue to perform at their best. In this guide, we’ll cover essential maintenance tasks, provide a seasonal maintenance checklist, and share some do it yourself (DIY) tips to keep your Land Cruiser running smoothly for years to come.
Regular oil changes are the lifeblood of any vehicle, and your Toyota FJ60 or FJ40 is no exception. Whether you are servicing an old engine or a new engine that has been outfitted to fit the classic FJ, it will always require consistent lubrication to prevent wear and tear. It’s recommended to change the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on your driving conditions. Always use high-quality oil that suits your vehicle’s specifications, and don’t forget to replace the oil filter during every change.
DIY Tip: When changing the oil, make sure the engine is warm to help the oil drain easily. Always check the oil level with the dipstick after refilling to ensure it’s at the correct level, being careful not to under or overfill.
The braking system is critical, whether you are taking your FJ40 or FJ60 on-road or on off-road adventures. Regularly inspect the brake pads, rotors, and brake lines for wear and tear. Replace the brake pads if they are below the manufacturer’s recommended thickness. Additionally, check the brake fluid level and top it off as needed. Bleeding the brakes every two years can help remove air bubbles and maintain braking efficiency.
DIY Tip: If you notice any squeaking or grinding noises while braking, it’s a sign that your brake pads may need immediate replacement. Don’t ignore this and make sure that you change the pads before they cause damage to the rotors which can be costly.
Tire rotations are essential for even tire wear, which can extend the life of your tires and improve fuel efficiency. It’s recommended to rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. For the FJ60 and FJ40, a “cross pattern” rotation is often preferred, where the front tires are moved to the opposite rear position and the rear tires to the opposite front position.
DIY Tip: While rotating the tires, check for signs of uneven wear, which could indicate alignment issues. Don’t forget to check the tire pressure and adjust it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
In many seasonal locations, it is important to follow certain guidelines to prepare for extreme weather that each new season may bring.
Maintaining an old Toyota Land Cruiser, whether it’s an FJ60 or FJ40, is not only necessary but can also be rewarding as you are keeping a piece of history on the road. Regular maintenance, seasonal check-ups, and some DIY know-how (or taking it to your favorite mechanic), will keep your classic Toyota FJ60 or FJ40 on the road (or off-road) for years to come, preserving a legacy of rugged reliability.
