The Land Rover Defender has to be one of the first vehicles that come to mind when the subject of off-roading comes up. Is there anything more likened to off-roading than the Land Rover? At ECD, we don't think so. Ultimately, our goal is to preserve the Land Rover legacy while promoting the restoration of classic Land Rover Defenders across the States. Read on to learn more about the rich legacy behind the Land Rover Defender and to discover more about Custom Defender pricing options.
Despite being an offshoot of the original Land Rover series, the Land Rover Defender has uniquely built a legacy. In 1948, the British car manufacturing company known as the Rover Company began manufacturing Land Rovers inspired by the jeeps used throughout World War II. However, these new Land Rovers quickly took on an image of their own, becoming sought-after off-roading vehicles.
In 1967, Rover was sold to Leyland Motors, headquartered in Leyland, England. British Leyland took over the manufacturing of Land Rovers from 1968 to 1978. After experiencing some business troubles, British Leyland created a separate Land Rover company in 1978. While still under the British Leyland umbrella, Land Rover Ltd. became the official manufacturer of Land Rovers.
In 1983, Land Rover Ltd. introduced the first Vintage Land Rover Defender to the Land Rover lineup. The 1983 Defender was marketed as the Land Rover 110. The following year, Land Rover came out with another Defender known as the Land Rover 90. In 1985, a third Defender was manufactured, known as the Land Rover 127. However, the Land Rover 127 was later remarketed as the Defender 130 in the 1990s. The Land Rover 110 and Land Rover 90 were also remarketed as the Defender 110 and Defender 90 to avoid confusion when Land Rover began production of the Land Rover Discovery.
When a vehicle is described as vintage, it means it's at least 30 years old. With the classic Defenders having been built throughout the 1980s and 1990s, these vehicles are already or quickly approaching that 30-year mark. While there can be quite a few challenges associated with driving and maintaining a 30-year-old vehicle, there's just something special about cruising around in a custom Defender.
Some of the top benefits of owning a custom defender include the following:
Owning a vintage Defender is like owning a piece of history. However, owning that piece of history does come with a price tag. While custom Defender pricing will vary from shop to shop, going to a garage specializing in Defender restorations will always be the best bet. At ECD, we offer a variety of custom Defender options.
