As classic SUVs go, the range rover classic (RRC) is a gorgeous piece of motoring history. Combine that with the ability to customize and thoroughly modernize your RRC, and you’ve got a luxury vehicle hand built to your exact specifications. But why do so many buyers turn to the classic RRC when they want a luxury 4x4 SUV? Let’s find out more.
Range Rover Classics are generally models produced between 1970 and 1995. A wealth of history makes the RRC very sought after, as well as its ability to thrive both on- and off-road, while providing a comfortable interior and ride. Considered more versatile than its cousin, the Land Rover Defender, the Range Rover boasts a 100” chassis, coil springs, and a Rover V8 wrapped in bodywork originally designed to be utilitarian and protective. RRCs are popular as family cars, luxury vehicles, or as collectibles for car history buffs – as well as exemplary luxury vehicles for day-to-day use.
People buy a customized Range Rover Classic because:
The long-wheelbase (LBW) Range Rover first arrived in 1992. The Range Rover County LBW was the first, and LBW Range Rovers are still produced to this day. How do you choose the right RRC (LWB) for your needs?
This model has some unique historical points. This was the first model to combine a diesel-injection engine (2.5 liter BMW 6-cylinder) with electronic controls. It was also the last to use interior’s supplied by British luxury supplier, Connolly Leather, before they went out of business.
One of the older and rarer LWB models, this classic SUV is available with a 4.2 liter V8 and is less reliant on electric additions than newer models. However, many require significant renovations to both the interior and the engine to restore them to full luxury.
ECD helps you build your ideal car from the ground up. Choose your trim, your engine, and what luxury features you want. The ultimate RRC design experience.
If you decide a Range Rover is the classic SUV for you, it’s worth knowing a little bit about the history of the vehicle before you go shopping. For example, if you want a 4-door vehicle, you’ll need to look at models from 1981 onward. For the first 11 years on the market, the Range Rover was only 2-door, which might not be suitable for all buyers. However, the 2-door models are more valuable, and the original Velar prototypes are the most valuable of all.
Models from 1994 and beyond are more luxurious than older models, with features such as rectangular headlights instead of round ones, and the modern chassis shape. If you’re purchasing a customized Range Rover Classic, of course, you’ll have total control over the features your car includes.
Other notes to look out for when purchasing a second-hand Range Rover Classic include:
There’s always the option to restore classic SUVs with newer engines and more luxury specs designed for modern driving.
Restoring a classic vehicle can be about so much more than simply getting it back to how it came off the production line. Talk to ECD about our three primary trims: Retro, Custom, or Signature.
