In May, E.C.D. announced its latest Tesla Direct Drive Motor option for its range of Luxury Custom SUVs. Since the announcement, the support and excitement have been evident, but fans of our V8 engine options challenge the decision to bring electric to the Defender. We’re going to break down the possible lifestyle and performance benefits of our V8 engine options compared to our new electric drivetrain.

Modern performance and reliability are the main reasons our GM drivetrains (the LS3, LS3+, LC9, LT1, and Supercharged LT4 engines) dominate as the number one choice for most of our clients. These V8 engine options offer plenty of power compared to other modern luxury custom SUVs. Another benefit is that after-market bolt-on additions mean horsepower, and performance can be increased relatively easily. Starting at 320 hp with LC9 to 640 hp with the Supercharged LT4, the power range of the V8 options is evident with the roar of the engine. 

The smooth Tesla Direct unit offers 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds, an experience that is much faster than modern vehicles on the road today. The most significant difference here is that your performance benefits will come into play when it comes to energy efficiency and maintenance-free driving. This drivetrain option is ideal for those looking to have a Defender with vast amounts of power that also offers quiet, reliable rides.

That being said, both the V8 and Electric engines still offer the same “go-anywhere” attitude that remains true to the Defender. The Tesla Direct Drive electric unit might be more convenient for those living in an urban environment where local charging stations mean easily charging your Electric Defender while going in for a bit of shopping. For those who prefer the roar of a V8 and a bit of showing off at stoplights, the V8 is the way to go. But at the end of the day, the electric Defender is much faster.
