When we set out to create a design experience for our clients that gave them full control of their build, we knew that to truly stand out we had to offer a nearly unlimited range of options to ensure we could build the ultimate dream machines.
For our engines, we wanted to have a variety of Defender V8 options ranging from efficient to pure power.
With its release in 1983, the original Defender V8 engine was the 3.5-liter Rover V8. Underpowered and underwhelming were overstatements, as this engine produced only 158-horsepower. It’s long been debatable just how reliable the original Defender V8 engines. Enthusiasts and restoration professionals still frequent forums and boards to discuss the reliability of the original Defender V8 engines and which engines might be better suited. Due to the lack of performance, questionable reliability, general sense of just being underwhelming, we no longer offer this as a Defender V8 option for our clients.
Modern advancements, plenty of power, and superior reliability are the top reasons why GM now dominates our Defender V8 drivetrain options.
Our standard Defender V8 engine is the GM 5.3-liter Vortec LC9 V8 engine. Originally built for use in Chevrolet and GMC SUVs, the Vortex LC9 makes for an excellent Defender V8 engine upgrade. It’s a small-block
engine with well-balanced power and torque designed to be fuel-efficient, quiet, and sturdy. Paired with a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission, shifts are smooth at both high and low RPMs. Requiring only regular unleaded fuel, the LC9 engine is a more affordable and fuel-efficient alternative to the LS/LT engines, making this is a top choice Defender V8 engine by our clients.

One of the most versatile Defender V8 replacements, and our most popular engine upgrade by clients, is the GM 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine. Used in the Chevrolet Corvette and widely used by automotive enthusiasts seeking to swap out their original automotive engines, the LS3 V8 is incredibly popular. Packed with plenty of power and capable of supporting a plethora of aftermarket bolt-on performance and mechanical upgrades make this an easy go-to Defender V8 replacement engine. Bolt-ons alone can increase the horsepower by nearly 100-bhp. The LS3 also comes available in an LS3+ variant from Turn Key Powertrain modified to deliver nearly 565-575 horsepower. Our fastest Defenders built to-date have each used the LS3+ Defender V8 engine upgrade.

Newly introduced to our line-up of Defender V8 engine options are the GM 6.2-liter LT1 V8 and Supercharged LT4 V8 engines. Our new generation LT1 offers a smooth 460 horsepower in line with its LS predecessors but with a original block casting and a more efficient oiling system. A true performance powerhouse boosted by an Eaton TVS supercharger, the LT4 is ideal for anyone who wants a Defender V8 that is just pure untamed power. It’s a direct-injection small-block engine that produces nearly 650-horsepower. The LT4 is currently used by GM in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Cadillac CTS-V. A more robust engine, it also accommodates bolt-ons and has been known to produce nearly 1000-horsepower to-the-wheels. It is the most powerful Defender V8 engine now offered by ECD.
