For decades the classic Defender has been known as a rugged go-anywhere vehicle roaming various terrains worldwide. The Land Rover Defender has been roving as a true 4×4 vehicle from cold snowbound winters to hot sandy deserts. Over the years, ECD has built its share of classic Defenders for many different adventurous terrains.
Features like snorkels in our Project Alpine Yeti help the 4×4 Defender tread into deeper waters like shallow rivers, beaches, or swamp mudding. The snorkel provides the engine with clean and dry air and also helps keep water and mud away from getting into the engine. The snorkel, originally featured on many Land Rover vehicles from the 60s onward, is now a rare feature to see on the vehicle, especially in the US. Snorkel kits are available and can add peace of mind for those looking to take their classic Defender deeper through water or mud.
For more rough terrains such as off-roading on forest floors, sand dunes, or thick mud, upgrading the build’s tires can enhance its capabilities as a 4×4. ECD’s Project Viking hits 7’4″ tall thanks to its 37″ Maxxis Trepador M/T tires and 2″ lift for the ultimate ability to take on steep terrain. For something a little less intimidating, our Project Alpinist features Nitto Ridge Grappler tires that handle mud or snow like a dream but are a little lower profile, awesome if you want to offroad but still fit into the parking garage. Updated wheels and tires not only add a sense of style and personality to your build but can truly change the level of ability they have when taking on extreme or mild terrains.
Performance features like a Safety Devices roll cage, ECD Air Ride suspension, and upgraded brakes help bring the classic Defender into the smooth driving capabilities of modern-day vehicles. The upgraded performance of our Defenders is ideal for 4×4 Defenders that are intended to be daily drivers, pounding away at paved highways and roads. These vehicles like our Project Winswep and Project Camper handle urban areas and curvaceous Californian mountain roadways like a dream.
Exterior accessories that have been accessorized with the classic Defender, such as a brush guard bumper, a heavy-duty Warn winch, and high-level spotlights, help your 4×4 Defender get out of tricky situations. If your build, or someone else’s, needs a tow or needs to be pulled out of being stuck, your 4×4 Defender can manage with ease. ECD’s Project Viper, a 4×4 Defender 130, was built specifically so that its owner could go off-roading in the dunes of Costa Rica. The client had the vehicle shipped there and took part in an off-roading event that took the vehicles through the mud, skinny mudded trails, and across sandy dunes. The vehicle also has special jerry cans and sand tracks mounted and built onto the vehicle’s rear body panels.
