Since 2009, any vehicle registered and sold in the state of California needs to pass an emissions test. If you’re preparing to drive a restored Jaguar E-Type, known as Jaguar XKE in North America, you need to be sure it can pass your state smog check. Find out how to make a Jaguar Series 1, Jaguar Series 2, or Jaguar Series 3 restoration fully compliant with ECD Automotive Design. Don’t let an inefficient drivetrain keep you from cruising along the beach in a fully restored Jaguar E-Type.
The California Air Resources Board requires most vehicles registered and driven in the state to include an Environmental Performance Label. This label displays the emissions score based on a certified smog check.
Many modern vehicles have no issues passing an emissions check. Older vehicles, particularly specific drivetrain options, have more difficulties meeting these standards. A vehicle that fails a smog check may not be able to be legally registered in the state.
A smog check consists of a test of the emissions performed at a licensed location. There are exceptions to the smog inspection requirements, however. For example, the following vehicles don’t need to have inspections performed:
Even if one of these applies to you, it’s still a good idea to choose a drivetrain that complies with the emissions laws in your state. These laws were put in place to limit your vehicle’s carbon footprint and other environmental concerns, so driving a compliant Jaguar E-Type can give you peace of mind.
Vehicles in any state need to pass the requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). EPA standards, however, aren’t as strict as California standards. This means that many vehicles can be legal to register in all 49 states but fail the registration requirements of California.
At ECD Automotive Design, you can find drivetrain options for your Jaguar XKE that meet California emissions standards. While some drivetrain options may not be available, there are still many ways to turn heads and enjoy a high-performance ride.
Consider a GM LT1 450 horsepower engine and 8-speed automatic transmission for modern emissions and classic power. ECD Automotive Design also has a Tesla-powered all-electric drivetrain for zero-emission performance.
Check with ECD Automotive Design to learn more about current California emissions standards and compliant drivetrains.
