It seems 2021 has been the year of electric. With Tesla constantly on the verge of the latest technology and even fine-tuning their self-driving vehicles, electric transportation is shaping up to be the efficient solution that is driving the definition of modern mobility. With states like California cracking down on emissions and sustainability, vintage vehicle owners have to think twice about driving around in their favorite resto-mods.
Even more common car brands such as Nissan and Mazda are contributing their version of an EV for the general public, and the demand is definitely there. With charging stations cropping up all across the United States, it’s no surprise that everyone wants an alternative option to the usual pumping gas. Let’s be honest, having to stop or get out to pump gas can be annoying, especially if you didn’t realize you needed to make a stop or you’re stuck in traffic on the highway with no exits in sight.
So for those seeking out a vintage custom from the likes of ECD, you’d be pleased to know the company announced its stake in the EV game in mid-2020. Working with UK-based resto-mod company Electric Classic Cars, ECD has secured an exclusive collaboration to offer electric engines as a drivetrain option for all of its Land Rover models. In the last year, the company has built and delivered an Electric Range Rover Classic (RRC), and the team is eager for a client to request an electric defender since all of its vehicles are made to order.
If you’ve seen the beasts and road dominators the company has previously built, you may be curious as to why anyone would even want such a tame engine option for their go-anywhere vehicle. But the benefits of having an electric drivetrain lie mostly in having a vehicle with modern convenience.
The Tesla Direct Drivetrain from ECD offers up to 220 miles of drive and a rather short 5-hour charge cycle. The 100-kWh battery can push an original Land Rover Defender from 0-60 in just 5.2 seconds, making it more than comparable to more modern vehicles sold off the lot today. So the Land Rovers themselves aren’t at a loss for power, but you might miss the growl and rumble of a V8. The electric drivetrain also offers 450 bhp with an option to upgrade to a 600 bhp version, which is still impressive for any nostalgic Land Rover.
With over 25,000 Tesla charging stations (and counting) across the US, any electric Land Rover from ECD can easily and conveniently connect to charge. For many of its clients, this means parking and charging their vehicle while stopping into Target, Publix, or many other shopping centers. The convenience of being able to charge while shopping or carrying out other business or errands is huge for the individuals that make up ECD’s clientele.
Another huge convenience that comes along with choosing the EV option from ECD is the ease of use and maintenance. Like many Tesla owners are aware, the vehicle markets itself as low maintenance for things like servicing and repairs. When it comes to having regular oil changes, fluid top-offs, and other servicing, having to get little maintenance done for your vehicle can be a huge perk, so yet another way to save on time and hassle.
A plus for those looking to take their classic Defender or Land Rover with electric conversion to a state with strict emissions regulations like California, these vehicles are completely compliant, making it easy to own a piece of history as your daily driver.
Since ECD offers custom bespoke vehicles, their Electric drivetrain option can be dropped into any vehicle in their lineup, which means you could have an electric Defender, RRC, or Series 2A. All options are also available to be shipped worldwide, from right here in the US (the company is based in Florida). So if you’re in the market for a historic vehicle made electric for modern times and fully customized from the ground up, the team at ECD is probably the place to get started.
