Everyone wants a classic Land Rover. Unfortunately, not everyone follows the best process for sourcing and buying a used classic Land Rover. Luckily, at ECD Automotive Design, we’ve been around the block a few times purchasing vintage Land Rovers, so we're here to share some tricks of the trade. Read on to discover some of the most common mistakes made when purchasing used classic Land Rovers and how to avoid them during your buying process.
One of the most common mistakes buyers make when purchasing a used classic Land Rover is failing to inspect the vehicle’s frame. We get it. Finding a “perfect” used Land Rover that’s the model and year you’ve been searching for can make you feel downright giddy. In fact, you might just pay cash before you’ve even taken the time to inspect the frame properly. Overlooking excessive rust or other significant body issues can throw a huge wrench into your plans when jumping into restorations.
The best way to avoid this mistake is by going into the sourcing and buying process with a patient mindset. Take your time when looking for a used Land Rover. For any vintage vehicle, always thoroughly inspect the body frame from top to bottom before handing over any cash or signing on any dotted lines.
Another common mistake buyers make when purchasing used classic Land Rovers is neglecting to have the Land Rover adequately inspected. There may not be any signs of excessive work or body damage, but that doesn't mean the vintage vehicle is a sound purchase. You don’t want to sink your money into a vintage car that can’t be properly restored.
The simplest solution to this common mistake is to have a professional properly inspect any vintage Land Rover before buying it. Better yet, work with the team at ECD to source and build your classic Land Rover. This route ensures you don’t spend your hard-earned money on a vintage vehicle you won’t be able to enjoy.
While not as pressing as purchasing a vintage vehicle with severe structural damage, another mistake buyers tend to make is failing to research the car beforehand. The history behind the iconic Land Rover brand is vast. Thus, it’s essential to get a firm grasp of the history of the Land Rover and understand the various models that have been manufactured over the years.
The easiest solution is simply educating yourself on the Land Rover's background. Some good resources on the history of the Land Rover can be found on our blog or our ECD YouTube channel. To help you get started right now, check out the brief history of Land Rover highlighted below.
To understand the development of the Land Rover from Series I to Defender, you must travel back to the 1940s. In the aftermath of World War II, the Land Rover Company decided to move forward with a line of utilitarian off-roading vehicles that could support agricultural workloads. The design of these utility vehicles was inspired by the British Army Jeeps used during the war. Thus, the first Land Rover rolled off the production line in 1948. From 1948 to 1985, Land Rover manufactured the Series I, II, IIA, and III.
This original Land Rover Series lineup served as the predecessor for the first Land Rover Defender models that rolled off the production line for the first time in 1983. At the time, these models were marketed as the Land Rover One Ten. In 1984, the Land Rover Ninety was introduced to the lineup. The following year, the Land Rover 127 completed the trio. It wasn’t until the introduction of the Land Rover Discovery in 1989 that the One Ten, Ninety, and 127 were rebranded as Defenders. The One Ten became the Defender 110, the Ninety was named the Defender 90, and the 127 was rebranded as the Defender 130.
When choosing your Land Rover base model, the ECD team can source nearly any model year or variation in the lineup. At ECD, we've even sourced and completed restoration projects on early Land Rover Series IIA models, which were originally manufactured from 1961 to 1971. So, however you envision your classic Land Rover or vintage Defender coming to life, the team at ECD will find a way to make it happen.
