As a business that hand-finishes one-off Land Rovers to each owner’s specification, ECD is not a high-volume vehicle manufacturer. The duration is going to be dependent on design detail and parts supply, but typically it’s between 12 to 14 months between order and handover.

How Long Does a Custom Land Rover Build Take

At ECD Auto Design, every Land Rover is transformed through a lengthy process, but in the end the client receives a one-of-a-kind classic Land Rover that fits their exact specifications. Here is a snapshot of some of various phases that happens during the 12 to 14 months timeline:

1. Initial Consultation & Design Phase

The process begins with a consultation, in which you will sit down with our design team to turn your vision into reality. This includes selecting:

• Base Model: Select one of classic Defender 90, Defender 110, or Defender 130, or even Range Rover Classics.
• Powertrain: Options range from high-performance V8 engines to all-electric powertrains.
• Exterior & Interior Personalization: Select paint color, finishes, interior upholstery, and technologies.

Timing in this phase varies greatly by client as some know exactly what they want, while others take their time selecting their specification.  

2. Sourcing & Engineering

After the design is completed, the ECD team sources the ideal base vehicle, such as a classic Defender, a Series IIA classic, or a various Land Rover vehicle. The process also includes:

• Planning for Mechanical Upgrades, i.e., new suspension and drivetrain components
• Ordering custom components, possibly with specific lead times

3. Disassembly & Restoration

The base vehicle is torn down to a bare chassis. Most parts are replaced to up-to-date luxury standards. The initial steps are:

• Frame Restoration: The frame is restored, strengthened, and galvanized to prevent corrosion.
• New Powertrain Installation: From a Chevrolet LS3, LT1 or LT4, to an electric powertrain or a diesel, this installation installs the heart of your vehicle in a proper manner.
• Suspension & Brake Upgrades: High Performance suspension and braking systems are fitted to provide a smooth ride.

4. Custom Fabrication & Paint

With the mechanical work done, the vehicle is taken to the paint and fabrication process. The next is:

• Exterior Customization: One-off bodywork modifications, custom bumpers, and roof racks
• Paint Process: All our Land Rovers receive a professional multi-layer paint job in any color of your choice
• Custom Badging & Details: Custom details such as heritage-inspired details or engraved emblems

5. Interior Upholstery & Installation of Technology

While the vehicle is being modified, the interior is also be fabricated in the Upholstery department.  Once the exterior is completed, the Land Rover advances to interior finishing. This includes:

• Luxury Upholstery: Premium, Supreme, or Standard leather interior options are installed into the restored Defender, Series I or II or classic Range Rover.
• Modern Technology: In-car infotainment displays, premium audio systems, air conditioning, etc. are added to bring the vehicle to modern luxury status.
• Bespoke Features: One-off dashboard trim, ambient lighting, center consoles, etc. are added to offer the personal touch of the client.

6. Final Assembly & Quality Control

In the final phase, the vehicle undergoes rigorous testing to ensure every component meets ECD’s exacting standards. This includes:

• Road Testing: Testing of safety, durability, and performance in various driving situations
• Quality Assurance: Inspections of fit and finish, durability in mechanics, and overall functionality
• Final Detail & Shipment Preparation: The vehicle is detailed, polished, and prepared for pickup or shipment

Total Estimated Time for a Custom Defender or Range Rover

On average, a complete custom build of a Land Rover is completed in 12 to 14 months. The timeline is, though, contingent on:

• The amount of time the client spends designing their dream vehicle
• The complexity of the design
• Availability of specific parts and material
• Custom fabrication requirements
• Engine and drivetrain options
