One of the most critical stages in this process happens in the Drivetrain Assembly Bay, where classic Land Rover Defenders, Range Rover Classics, and Toyota FJs are brought to life with modern precision. Igor, our drive-train technician, is at the heart of this transformation, where he oversees the drivetrain assembly of these iconic vehicles, ensuring they meet the exacting standards that make each ECD build one-of-one.

Crafting the Drivetrain: A Step-by-Step Process

Each drivetrain assembly at ECD is more than just fitting parts together—it's about making sure every component is tailored to the specific model and vision for the build. A high level overview of this process is as follows:  us through his methodical approach to assembling and installing a drivetrain.

1. Inspection of Parts: Every build starts with a thorough inspection of the parts. Ensuring all components are in top condition is essential for performance and reliability.
2. Checking the Bill of Materials (BOM): This stage is all about planning. Igor considers the engine model, the exhaust configuration, and other vital details such as coolant placement, which can vary depending on the chassis. For example, some models can present unique challenges in terms of engine positioning and other fitment requirements.
3. Assembling the Engine: The drivetrain build begins in earnest here:
   • Transmission The transmission needs to be attached to the engine. It is then carefully torqued to meet exact specifications.
   • Transfer Case: The transfer case must be attached, and any modifications are made to fit specific vehicle.
4. Wiring and Heatshield Routing: Wiring is attached and routed. Heatshield is applied to ensure safety of components.
5. Venting and Sensors: Vents are added to the transmission and transfer case to allow gases to escape. Sensors for water temperature and oil pressure are installed for precise monitoring.
6. Radiator and Cooler Lines: Cooling is essential, so the radiator and stainless-steel transmission cooler lines (AN Lines) are fitted to keep everything running at the right temperature.

Perfecting the Build: Tailoring the Drivetrain to Each Model

One of the core responsibilities of this bay is making sure every drivetrain fits perfectly, whether it’s going into a Defender, Range Rover Classic, or Toyota FJ. The technician follows a detailed build sheet to make sure every part, modification, and component is accounted for. Every step of the process is checked and double-checked to ensure that the drivetrain not only fits but performs optimally in the specific vehicle.

Testing and Tuning: Before the Engine Roars

Once the drivetrain is installed, testing begins. Igor takes the following steps to ensure everything is ready for the road:

1. Fuel System Testing: Checking for leaks in the fuel lines is crucial for safety and performance.
2. Oil Pressure Testing: Before the engine is even fired up, the technician runs an oil pressure test to ensure everything is in working order. Only then can the vehicle be started, marking a key milestone in the build process.

Blending Performance and Innovation

Although each ECD vehicle is a classic, it typically features many modern upgrades such as powertrain. The technician is skilled at making sure that each powertrain is not only installed properly, but also running at optimal performance.  ECD’s step-by-step process ensures that each powertrain delivers both dependable and optimal performance without sacrificing the timeless appeal of the classic vehicle itself.

Overcoming Challenges: Adjusting for Custom Needs

Any type of customization can come with challenges. Adapting classic Defender, Range Rover or old Toyota Land Cruiser frames and adding modern powertrains is no different. Making sure that everything fits perfectly requires skill to be done effectively. Whether it’s custom engine placement or finding space for an EV powertrain, the technician’s problem-solving skills ensure that each build is completed to specifications.

Technician’s Pride

One of Igor’s favorite drivetrain modification was adding a full stainless steel exhaust system. He said that the look and sound it gave the custom Defender brought the SUV to the next level. His advice for anyone considering a drivetrain modification is simple: "Plan your vision to make that dream a reality. Don’t shy away from challenges as the project is a labor of love."

As with many of the ECD technicians, Igor felt the most rewarding part of his job is the challenge of working on "one-off" builds. Every custom modification feels like a victory once it’s completed, and it keeps him motivated day after day in the Drivetrain Assembly Bay.
