While classic cars can’t be beaten, even diehard gearheads can acknowledge the need to embrace more sustainable options when it comes to vehicles. Luckily for gearheads, the desire to be more eco-friendly doesn’t mean they have to give up their classics just yet. With restomod build projects like the custom Defenders from ECD, gearheads are able to embrace sustainable tech while still enjoying the classics they know and love.
The Land Rover nameplate has a long and storied history. Located in the West Midlands of England, the original Rover Company began manufacturing bare-bones utility vehicles in the late 1940s. The design of these off-roaders was inspired by the British Army Jeeps used during World War II. Their primary purpose was to serve as solid agricultural vehicles that could be taken anywhere. Their popularity soon grew well beyond England, providing the Rover company the opportunity to export the original Land Rover models all over the world.
A few decades after the Land Rover’s initial release, the boxy Defender SUVs were added to the lineup in the early 1980s. With their iconic style and off-roading capabilities, these classic Defenders have always inspired a feeling of freedom. With the humble beginnings of the Land Rover nameplate, hardly anyone could have imagined that the once hardy utility truck would become a status symbol decades into the future. Probably even harder to fathom would be that any of these Land Rover trucks would one day become all-electric.
Through custom Defender build projects, the team at ECD seamlessly blends the iconic Land Rover nameplate with the sustainable tech of today. ECD has been able to create some of the most eco-friendly off-roaders in the world with the integration of their 2nd Generation EV setup. This cutting-edge EV kit features an 84kWh setup that offers a 200-mile range. This all-electric setup also features Fast Charge, which allows the custom Defender to be charged from 10% to 80% in less than an hour.
It can sometimes feel that eco-friendly off-roaders are few and far between. However, that’s simply not the case when it comes to the build projects undertaken in the ECD garage. Just take a look at Project Homecoming and Project Midnight.
Project Homecoming is a custom Defender 110 with ECD EV Direct Drive. This custom Defender EV is finished in full gloss Grassmere Green with silver accents all around. Stepping inside Project Homecoming, passengers are met with a stunning single vertical diamond-stitched Coffee leather interior, dual captain chairs in the front and mid-row, and two benches located in the load area.
Project Homecoming is the ultimate off-roading SUV sporting 18-inch Sawtooth Wheels with BFG all-terrain tires, a six-point external roll cage, and LED spot lamps in the front and rear. With its EV setup, there’s no denying this custom Defender 110 is the ultimate eco-friendly off-roader.
However, its EV setup isn’t the only cutting-edge technology this off-roading SUV is sporting. In terms of modern tech features, this off-roading D110 is outfitted with a touchscreen stereo, a Gel audio sound system, Apple CarPlay, rear AC, and access to USB charging ports throughout.
Project Midnight is a custom Defender 90 soft top that sports the ECD 2nd Generation EV setup. This eco-friendly off-roader is finished in full gloss Narvik Black with black accents all around. The interior follows the same color scheme, with the two Recaro Orthopedic captain chairs and two forward-facing jump seats in the load area being wrapped in a single vertical diamond Volo Black leather.
On its exterior, Project Midnight features a classic front bumper, a custom steering guard, and a wide body kit. It’s well-equipped to handle the trails with 18-inch Khan 1983 wheels and BFG all-terrain tires. This eco-friendly off-roader also features a number of modern tech features like its ECD electric set gauges, Gel audio sound system, Apple CarPlay, rear AC, and access to USB charging ports throughout.
